What Makes Us Tick
CURRICULUM
The Ministry of Education has recently released a new curriculum overview, which is aimed at promoting the skills and attributes required for workers in a Knowledge society. So this is an exciting time for schools as we apply the intention of this document to the curriculum delivery in our own schools.
Literacy and Numeracy continue to remain our main focus, with the aim being that every child should complete their senior year able to communicate effectively, reading at or above their chronological age and demonstrating the mathematical skills that will enable them to have a choice in their future education.
We also ensure coverage of the other curriculum areas – Science, Social Studies, Technology, Physical Education, Health and the Arts.
Each term we have a school-wide inquiry topic where students participate in a guided inquiry process that encourages the development of independent research, information analysis, application, and presentation skills.
To support their learning our students are provided with a range of cultural and practical experiences. These include trips, visitors, and outdoor education experiences; such as our Year 5 to 8 student camp every second year.
We take a keen interest in sport; our students participate in a regular morning fitness programme, P.E skill lessons are timetabled and our Year 5 to 8 students are involved in interschool sport days.
Throughout all the curriculum areas teachers recognise that each child learns in their own way, so this individual difference is catered for and all students are encouraged to set their own learning goals and strive to achieve their personal best.
