Term 2 Inquiry : What Floats Your Boat? Toy Design
We began this unit by interviewing neighbours, family and friends about their favourite toys from childhood. We spoke with children from other classes to find out the types of toys they liked and why? We asked questions about the materials the toys were made from and how important colour was?
Next we looked through books and watched a video about toy design and the making of prototypes.
We were very lucky to have a visit from Richard Lees from Tinder Box, who introduced us to a range of Victorian toys. We were allowed to play with the toys and we found out how they worked - no batteries or electricity!!!
We are working in small groups to design a toy for a specific age group. We have to think about safety, size, durability, colour and materials.
Strand Maths
In the first two terms this year Room has investigated Statistics and Measurement. We have been learning to draw a range of graphs (such as Bar Graph, Stem and Leaf graphs, and Scatter Plot graphs). We are learning how to interpret the information that graphs give us, and to record information accurately. We have completed a unit called Paper Planes. We have created and tested our planes to work out which length and wingspan is most effective for distance of flight. We could only change 1 variable each time we made a new plane. our results varied, and we realised that technique definitely affects distance flown!
Numeracy
Number knowledge and strategies is our focus in Numeracy. During term 2 our emphasis has been on multiplication and division. We have been playing lots of games that encourage us to have fast recall, and we have used computer sites too.
