Term Two Inquiry "Children helping Children"

This term our inquiry learning was based around Enterprise. Our values were Thinking, Community & Participation as well as Excellence. We discussed how “Children can help Children”. We explored ideas on the Save the Children website. From their wish list we voted to raise money for the purchase of malaria nets. Mosquitoes may be tiny but for the 40% of the world's population at risk from malaria, they can be deadly. 90% of deaths caused by malaria occur in Africa, mostly among young children. In fact, malaria kills an African child every 30 seconds.

This gift will provide a mosquito net treated with insecticide, so children can sleep safely at night.

When we buy mosquito nets, the actual gift from New Zealand Save the Children Fund, will be given to children in China, Myanmar, Sri Lanka or in emergencies. To raise money to purchase malaria nets the children decided to have a market day at school selling items and crafts made mostly from recycled materials.

The recycled items used included

  • Clean cardboard milk containers
  • Twigs
  • String or twine
  • Shells or interesting items to make mobiles with
  • Small stones
  • Toothpicks
  • Plastic laundry or milk bottles
